Dr. Wendy Darke

Founder | CEO | Executive Producer of True to Nature Ltd.
(Former Head of BBC Natural History Unit)

Following on from her 25 year career at the BBC Natural History Unit, where she was responsible for overseeing 1,000 + programmes, Wendy founded True To Nature, a Bristol based Independent Production Company specialising in innovative, world class natural history and premium specialist factual content, using great story telling and never seen before content to connect people of all ages and backgrounds to the natural world.

 Since launching the company in 2016, Wendy has secured 5 commissions delivering content for partners worldwide, including BBC, UKTV Dave, Fremantle International, France 5, PBS Nature / WNET Thirteen, ZDFE, ZDF, ARTE, BAMSI, Smithsonian, CBBC & CBeebies.

Airing in 2019, is an ambitious, EXPEDITION with Steve Backshall 10x60’, Premium Factual Adventure Travel, GANGS OF LEMUR ISLAND, 5x60’ BAMSI/Smithsonian/ARTE and Volcano 24, 1 x 60 PBS Nature / ZDFE, ZDF, & ARTE.

Prior to June 2016, Wendy was Head of the BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) where she was responsible for editorial governance for all output including BBC One Landmarks, Africa (2013), Life Story (2014), BAFTA award winning global Live event, Big Blue Live (2015), BBC Two Natural History Trilogies Wild Japan (2015), New Zealand (2016) and Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur (2016).  She also secured a very strong pipeline of future commissions for the NHU including 4 new landmark series including Planet Earth II (2016), Blue Planet II (2017), Dynasties (2018) and Seven World's (2019/20).  As Executive Producer for NHU Children’s for 6 years, she created and delivered the award winning CBeebies Andy’s Wild Adventures and the BAFTA award winning Deadly 60 with Steve Backshall, which has now become a global brand inspiring the younger generation to connect with natural world.

View Hannah's Bio

Prior to working as Senior Producer running development at True to Nature Hannah had a long and varied career at the BBC Natural History Unit, starting out in the commercial arm of the NHU making content for the international market before working across a wide range of output for the BBC including blue chip natural history, presenter led and children’s programming as well as observational documentary and live output. She worked on the ground breaking multi Emmy award winning series Wild China for BBC2, and other titles including Wildlife in a War Zone for BBC4 and Creatures Like Us for Animal Planet International before joining the UK’s longest running BAFTA award winning British wildlife show, Springwatch & Autumnwatch, where she progressed from an assistant producer to live producing the show for 3 years. Alongside programme making for the BBC and international markets she has worked in development for the BBC and Children’s BBC and event managed the BBC tent at the Festival of Nature in Bristol.

Loz started his broadcasting career in sport and news radio, having produced and presented programs for both local and national BBC radio stations. He made the jump to television in 2015, working at the BBC on programs such as Springwatch and BBC Earth’s Our Blue Planet. More recently, he worked as a wildlife consultant on the BBC/HBO drama ‘His Dark Materials’ before starting as a content producer for BBC Wales. Loz joined True To Nature as the digital producer for ‘Expedition’ and is now working across a number of development ideas.

View Elena's Bio

Elena studied Television Production at the University of Westminster and graduated in 2016. With a keen interest in documentary making, Elena’s final year film followed the lives of refugees living in Kurdistan and won awards from The Royal Television Society, Portsmouth International Film Festival and Amsterdam Lift-Off Festival. With a passion for wildlife and conservation Elena volunteers with the Wildlife Trust and is helping to produce a film for social media to promote the benefits of spending time in nature. Elena’s previous experience is in a London Advertising Agency and worked as an Assistant Producer on a range of television, cinema and radio campaigns and is now pursuing a career in Natural History Television Production.

Award winning filmmaker, drone pilot and commercial diver, Nick has spent well over a thousand hours underwater with sharks and other marine life with particular fascination in octopus. Most recently, Nick has filmed A Year In The Wild: North Atlantic, Springwatch, The One Show, Redbull and The Guardian. He has a broad range of experience setting up shoots in challenging environments around the world, is trained in sea survival and as a diver medic. From a previous career in graphic design, Nick now utilises an eye for composition and colour both on-screen and behind the camera.

Over the last 20 years Helena has built up a wealth of industry experience across a diverse range of genres; including Specialist Factual, Natural History, Documentary, Features, Live Events, Children’s and Digital Output. Working primarily for the BBC over this period, she managed the highly successful Natural History strand The Natural World and was instrumental in developing CBBC's award winning 'Deadly Brand’ – including Deadly 60, Live n Deadly and Deadly Mission Madagascar, which all form part one of the biggest selling global television brands. She has a reputation for forging strong and trusted relationships with talent and co-producers. She has also been key to the delivery of some of the BBC’s biggest and most ambitious live Outside Broadcasts including the Chelsea Flower Show and most recently the BAFTA award winning series Big Blue Live.

Jonny brings over 30 years’ experience in factual television ranging from news and human obs docs to natural history and specialist factual. BAFTA AND Emmy nominated, he's made series for the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Discovery, A+E Networks and Animal Planet as director, series producer, show runner and executive producer. Jonny specialises in presenter led adventure travel and expeditions, having worked on Lost Land of the Volcano, Lost Land of the Jaguar and Expedition Borneo for the BBC.

Sanna has filmed expeditions all over the world - tracking down grizzlies and wolves in the wilds of the Canada's Great Bear Rainforest, exploring the dense jungles of the Peruvian Amazon to document the nocturnal habits of black caiman and trekking high into the mountains of Bhutan in search of the elusive snow leopard. She has filmed undercover in the South East Asia’s infamous ‘Golden Triangle’ – a lawless area run by militia warlords – to expose the illegal trade in tigers, pangolins and Asiatic black bears. And has spent weeks in the forests of DRC on the trail of poachers who are decimating the country’s gorilla population. In 2013, she negotiated the first ever film access into Myanmar just as the country emerged from half a century of military dictatorship. And she spent the following year on the frontline of elephant conservation with Saba Douglas Hamilton during the most dramatic spike in elephant poaching in over a decade. Sanna has lead teams of celebrities through some of the toughest emotional experiences of their lives filming for Comic Relief – taking Lenny Henry to Nairobi’s biggest slum and Chris Evans to India's tsunami ravaged coastline, helping Miranda Hart to face her own demons and showing Jack Dee the tragic reality of child death rates in Malawi. She spent a year filming with Adrian Edmondson on the border of Kenya and Somalia to answer the challenging question of whether Africa needs aid.

Rosie is a producer/director who has worked all over the world. Having studied Zoology and worked habituating gorillas in Gabon and rehabilitating Orangutans in Malaysia she started her television career in Live television. Since then she has worked on Springwatch, Alaska live and Most recently Blue Planet live documenting the state of sharks in the Bahamas. Rosie has worked extensively in Children’s television production on the Bafta award winning Deadly sixty, Naomi’s Nightmare’s of Nature and Backshall’s Deadly Adventures. She spent 6 months filming the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda for the BBC Natural History Unit’s series ‘Mountain Gorilla’ and most recently she has produced and directed on Steve Backshall’s Expedition series for UKTV and the BBC. This involved filming the first assent of an Arctic Mountain in Greenland, a kayak expedition up the largest fjord in the world and the exploration of a new desert canyon in Oman.

An Assistant Producer/Director with over 6 years experience in documentary filmmaking, largely within the BBC’s Natural History Unit. Anna has worked across a range of output including blue-clip landmark productions, expeditions, observational documentaries and live OBs. Anna has successfully produced and directed complex shoots in challenging, remote foreign locations. A confident self-shooter, most recently shooting second camera on the new Expedition series with Steve Backshall. Anna has experience in all aspects of production from idea conception (Beavers Behaving Badly and Mountain Lions: Big Cats in High Places) to pitching to commissioners and co-producers through production and on to preparation of publicity material (print and digital) for transmission. A solid academic background in biological sciences and oceanography. Anna spent six years, prior to joining the BBC, managing high-profile environmental projects.

Briony is an energetic and versatile AP/ Director with 7 years’ experience in television production. With a degree in Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and a passion for telling fascinating stories about the natural world. A resilient team player, Briony thrives on challenges and loves working in remote locations. Briony is skilled in setting up shoots both in the UK and overseas, finding compelling narratives and developing a great rapport with contributors, fixers and locals. A strong writer, Briony has scripted, directed and edit produced films for broadcast television and digital outlets. A self-shooter with sound recording and data wrangling experience. Briony can speak and write in French and has passed courses in Remote Locations First Aid and Medical Evacuation Planning.

Natalie has worked in the Bristol Natural History industry in Bristol for 7 years but was previously based in London and working in the music and events industry. Natalie's experience ranges from working on location with multi cam events, studio filming, live international OB, along with UK & international VT set ups. Very experienced Silvermouse user, along with all filming logistics (contracting, bookings, carnets, insurance, permits, visas) with budget management and forecasting experience within ECAT.
